FORGING LEADERSHIP WHILE LEARNING -When the Singaporeans came to India

FORGING LEADERSHIP WHILE LEARNING
Sunday, 27th November 2011 was filled with excitement as students and teachers from Singapore, reached their destination as part of the Singapore Indian immersion program the first of its kind. What was perceived to be a culture very different from ours turned into a experience very similar to ours.
The initial reaction of the students as the y stepped out of the airport and into the roads was Hey the traffic was not bad as we expected. It took them only a while to realise they were wrong.PM Varghese sir escorted them from the airport to the guestrooms in CJC.The next morning they were given a tour of the university campus with and students showed them around with great pride and pleasure after a briefing and welcoming by our college principal complete with flowers, candies, perfumed sprinkles and aarti. As part of the immersion program, they had a firsthand experience of an Indian school environment in different class of different streams in intervals during their stay. Bangalore is the software capital of our country; a trip was planned to Infosys. The Singaporeans also visited a slum organised by CSA to study income disparities in India. The trip to the Toyota Factory in Bidadi was enthralling to the Singaporeans as Singapore does not have factories and industrial setups due to its small size. They walked through the entire production and assembly process of Toyota cars. The video shown also helped them witness the evolution of Toyota cars through ages. A cultural Night was organised where our students showcased their talent depicting India’s rich cultural heritage. They enjoyed the show very much that they requested our students to put a show in their school in Singapore! But we were more amazed when the Singaporeans presented a dance of their own, which was a mix of many cultures even Indian! India is a secular country and we like to show it a trip to church was planned and a day was spent for shopping in Brigade Road. The next day an assembly was called to honour the guests and later a presentation was brought about to show a detailed comparison between globalisation in India and drew parallels between Singapore and India. The program ended on a high note of having participated in a completely new experience fruitful and rich. When they realised it was time to head home, the prayed that the plane would be cancelled, but in vain! It was BYE BYE to the land, people and culture they would always cherish in their minds.
